Schiermonnikoog is mostly made up of dunes and salt marshes. Seeing as the rest is beaches, woodland and polders, it would be no exaggeration to call Schiermonnikoog one big nature reserve. Almost the entire island is a National Park, which is unique among the Wadden Islands. This natural paradise houses hundreds of thousands of birds, and even orchids flower here. In fact, half of all Dutch plants and flowers can be found on ‘Schier’.
