The main attraction of Schiermonnikoog is its immense sandy beach. Whereas most of the Wadden Islands are impressive in their length, it is the width which counts on Schiermonnikoog. The beach is no less than a kilometre wide at its largest point, making it one of Europe’s widest, and it is still growing. Sand deposits from the North Sea continuously form sandbanks that merge with the beach. To say the vast open space provides peace aplenty is an understatement. The beach is also one of the Netherlands’ cleanest.
