The surroundings of the Dutch Frisian Islands
Our lovely islands can be reached via the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Noord-Holland.
Friesland
When you want to go to Terschelling, Vlieland or Ameland, you'll travel through the province of Friesland to the harbour in either Harlingen or Holwerd. This province is known for its water, culture and history. Some of you might know the very nice Frisian eleven cities and the skating tour that occurs once in a couple of years. These cities full of tradition are worth a visit throughout the year. And what about watersport? De Frisian lakes are undisputed among real watersportfans. Click here for more information.
Groningen
When you want to go to Schiermonnikoog, you will most often travel through the province of Groningen to the harbour in Lauwersoog. The province of Groningen is more than just the great city of Groningen, the centre of the north of the Netherlands. The north of the province for instance offers lots of nice villages that are built on little hills that protected the villagers against floodings in earlier times. Close the city of Winschoten lies the recreational area (created around a lake) called Blauwe Stad ("Blue City") and in the southeast of the province you will find forrests and the fortress village Bourtange. And don't forget to visit the seal asylum in Pieterburen, known to all Dutch people. Click here for more information.
Noord-Holland
When you want to go to Texel, you'll travel through the province of Noord-Holland to the harbour in Den Helder. This province offers more than the city of Amsterdam. Cities like Haarlem, Schagen and Volendam appeal to many as well. And the Beemsterpolder and de Stelling van Amsterdam are worth a visit as well. Click here for more information.
