Enjoy the rugged and varied countryside

The roe deer know what’s good for them. No wonder these animals are found on Ameland yet not on the other Wadden Islands. The countryside is unspoilt, rugged and varied. One minute you’re walking over the mudflats, along the salt marshes and through the dunes, the next you have views of woodland, heathland and meadows. Ameland’s dunes have stories of their own to tell. Some are age-old, like Het Oerd, a fantastic dune area with high dunes and wet valleys, while others still change daily, like De Hon, a vast sand drift with young dunes and a large salt marsh.
